Black Eagles inspire a young champ

Darts & Stuff of InterestTheCommandant writes "About five years ago on New Yearís Eve we were having a party with our dart team and dart playing friends, it was a great night of playing various match ups on the one board we had set up at the time and even the kids were involved. At one point in the evening my friend Ken brought out his new Laserdart Black Eagles and suddenly the world changed for my 11 year old son.

Kurtis was really starting to like playing darts and his competitive spirit was starting to show through more and more and when he saw those black barreled darts and heard their name that was all she wrote! He had to have a set - period. He hounded me all night for those darts and I decided to play into his interest a little and see just how serious the kid was so I told him:

ďWell son, when you can hit a Ton80 Iíll buy you a set of those.Ē I think I may have added that he had to do it in a match too because I realized how easy it would be to hit one in practice but doing so in a match is another story Ė I know, Iím evil *chuckle* but I wasnít about to go out and buy a set of Black Eagles or any other top dart just because the kid wanted them at this point. Not that I wouldnít support my kidís habit, are you kidding me? But any set of darts in that price range has to be special, has to be something that a person really knows they want the best, and knows what style they want. I wonít just but any dart because I think I might like them Ė well, ok maybe I will but I wonít do it for my kids until Iím sure they are ready for them. I wanted him to actually learn to play a little more seriously first. Then the skyís the limit!

As the years passed Kurtis received various new sets of darts, flights, shafts, cases, chalkers and everything else you can think of. It wasnít uncommon to get him a set of one set of darts or give him a set I had but generally they were the usual $40-$50 set of tungsten darts most people start playing with.

Kurt played in the Oregon Open, The Heartbreak Shoot, Water Follies and a few blind draws but always after long droughts of not playing because he lived with his mom and she didnít have a board up, so heíd come out for the summer, practice a little and then it was off to a tournament. He had begun to play with a set of Nodorís that I had tested out which were hexagonal with dots drilled into the flat surfaces. A curious set of darts to be sure and we called them the Ďdiceí darts because of the dots in the flats. Kurt liked them and I thought this was the set he was going to settle on. Quite frankly I wasnít thinking about what was said so many years earlier. Then it all changed, Kurt came out for the summer when he was 15 and began practicing more and more. He wanted to play in a big tournament and was determined to make some money doing so. Little did I know he had something else in mind.

Off to the Richland Red Lion Inn and one for the record books we went. Kurt was serious and excited as he always loves to compete in Dart Tournaments but this was different I think. He wanted more, he wanted to win and not like before, this time he was determined in a whole new way.

Once at the event Kurt began hitting the board with purpose and while he was his usual joking and having fun self, he also seemed a little pre-occupied. Was there something else going on in there?

As the evening progressed Kurt got more and more excited until all of a sudden he and his partner in a blind draw had won a match but Kurt didnít really seem to care nearly as much as what heíd earned in that match Ė he hit a 180! ďYou owe me a set of Black Eagles Dad!!Ē he told me.

What? Thatís right, my son had been so intent on getting better and getting good enough to hit 180ís that it didnít matter that he won the match, didnít matter if heíd held his own against some great players, didnít matter that he knew the math or anything else. The only thing that mattered was that heíd finally achieved his goal: he hit a Ton80 so that I had to get him a set of Black Eagles!

I can hardly imagine what must have gone on over the past 5 years in that young manís mind but to imagine that his key motivator, his main incentive to improve, his greatest desire to win was a set of Laserdarts Black Eagles!

Iím very proud of my son for sticking to his guns, for gritting it out and pushing hard to meet the challenge and thanks to Terry at Laserdarts Kurtis has a set of Black Eagles to compete with in his next tournament. Iíll have to get a picture of Kurt with his new darts but alas, he moved back to his momís this Christmas so it might be a few months before I can get one.

Oh and as if hitting one 180 wasnít enough he went on to hit a dozen last summer as well as beating Rainman, Jester, myself and a few others in a game of 50 out Ė maybe we ought to say he canít have the darts until he wins the LVDC? Nah, he earned them.

Way to go son! Iím very proud of you. And thanks Laserdarts for making such a great product that in and of itself inspired a new player to achieve such a high standard of play through hard work and determination all for the sole purpose of earning himself a top quality if not cool, set of darts.

Laserdarts Black Eagles, the darts Kurt the Commandants son plays with now.
