pacmania-the epic tale of a new life for darts - part 4

Dart Tournamentsdart_talker writes "Pacmania-II, Thursday, Day One:
This was a day dedicated to three “Blind Draw Doubles” events; 501, Modified Chicago, and Cricket. The highlight of these events were that an area soft-tip league player Dan Daugherty, who describes himself as an average player, made the finals on stage for two of the events and finished “Top 4” in the third on the strength of some great play and drawing excellent partners. The number of entries for these events was good, but no where near what had been anticipated with none of the day’s events exceeding more than 146 players.

Pacmania-II, Days Two and Three – Friday and Saturday:
There was also much anticipation as to when Manny would appear on both of these days, but in the end he did not appear. These days featured some of the best Men and Women Dart players in North America (with the exception of those who attended the Canadian Event and those who were at the PDC Event in Germany), and unfortunately the fact that there were so many greats in attendance (in conjunction with it being Father’s Day weekend) may have contributed to the lack of your “average player” turning out on those days. The standard of darts played on those days was fantastic to watch, and on thanks to L. David Irete the matches that were held on the stage were event more exciting due to his camera and TV! The only disappointment was that no matter how hard he and the convention center staff tried, they could not get a steady enough Internet connection to stream the finals of the day’s events live. You can see some of the raw footage at: http://www.justin.tv/weaselstv/all. There were parties planned for both of these evenings (plus a poker tournament on Saturday night) which meant that one finals match of each day had to be played the following day.

Pacmania-II, Day four:
Again the day was made to order with great events for our top players, and the word finally came that Manny would not make it to the tournament due to bombings in his city. I’m not sure if it was the fact that so many top players were at the event or if it was the fact that Manny could not make it, but in the end the crowd of dart players was rather sparse much of the Sunday. That would change when it came time for the last “Blind Draw” event. It was called a “4 person team” Blind Draw and it works like this…

Enough entries are required to make sure that all teams have 4 players (if memory serves there were enough players for 35 teams). Players are then put together into 4 person teams via random draw, the pairings are then made to determine which teams play one another and then the fun begins. The match is won by the first team to win four legs, and the match consist of 4 legs of 301, a leg of doubles 501, a leg of doubles cricket, and a team game of 1001 if a tie breaker is required. At the start of the Blind Draw everyone was apprehensive about how it might work out, but in the end it seemed that everyone enjoyed this event more than expected.

I’ve rattled on a great deal here, and for that reason it’s time to stop, but to sum it all up I’ll say these things:

Is there room for improvement of the Pacmania events? Yes and I think several of the problems were well identified and solutions are being considered.

Was the event a success? I would have to say a qualified yes as the attendance could have been better and that may be due to the events dates, short notice of the event taking place and the weekend the event was held.

Will there be future Pacmania events? Yes, there are plans in the works as we speak for a Pacmania III in maybe October or November.

The only other question is…

Will you be attending?

Great job on this article series DT! It was great meeting you and watching it all happen, you described it perfectly--except the part about rambling on too much--I wanted to read more!
