ESPNís World Series of Darts: How cool is that?

National Darts NewsErik writes "From an American dart players perspective the World Series of Darts put on by ESPN and the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) is like the first ever running of the Super Bowl and the show was something else!

First, my hat is off to ESPN for putting this event on. Itís a first in the Dart world here in the USA and ESPN has done a great job! So thanks ESPN for coming up with the World Series Of Darts and for putting it on prime time TV!

Second, I wanted to take a moment to comment on the presentation as I see it. You see, darts in the US is strong, but not nearly strong enough and the top players simply arenít recognized any more then your local newscasters are! Oh sure, you might know who your local newscaster is, but does someone across the nation know? I rather doubt it, and this is what Americaís darting pros face every day. They arenít known, donít get recognition for the amazing hardships they endure to be good at this great sport and hardly get compensated for their prowess at the oche, but perhaps that just might change. At least, the World Series of Darts is sure to make a difference if in no other way, then to introduce them to the country.

In truth, here in the USA, dart players donít make much money, if at all, and there travel expenses to compete are literally out of this world! Imagine trying to compete in 30 or 40 tournaments a year when most of those tournaments are a long drive or an airplane ride away! What with gas and airfare costs these days itís just plain prohibitive for good dart players in the USA to get to tournaments and then, once there the payouts donít cover half the cost of travel assuming you actually won!

Imagine traveling 1000 miles to a tournament in which you can win $300 if you play exceptionally well and get some decent breaks along the way and you have a good idea of what American dart players face.

    Travel and expenses: $500-$1000
A lifetime of practice: who can put a price on that?
Actually winning and flying home with $300 after a long weekend of darts? Priceless Ė perhaps literally!

So the World Series of Darts stands to change things here in America and ESPN and the PDC have put on quite a good show too! Not to mention the American dart players!

In the first installment what we saw were American players fighting to beat the Brits with some fantastic averages, and the Americans were in it! They were to the outs but just missed, they hit the big shots and fought back from falling behind but so far they havenít come through with a big win. Thatís ok though, because I think they won anyway, after all they are on the big stage during prime time in the USA and all America gets to watch.

Maybe next time Ray Carver or Jimmy Widmayer walks into a strange gas station far from home someone will say ďHey, didnít I see you on TVĒ?

    I hope so!

    Thanks ESPN!

I think it is good that darts is finally getting a prime time showing. Maybe if this gets popular then live events can be shown and the sport can grow.
