 World Championship 4

PHP-NukeCharis writes "Luckily I had recovered a little bit on Monday morning, I was still coughing but my head was clear. I enjoyed my English breakfast and was remembered that in this hotel they served very salty bacon…At least one didn’t need to salt the eggs!"

 World Championship 3

News for Dart PlayersCharis writes "After the usual not really quiet Christmas days I headed back to England for the second round of the World Championship. This time there were no weather problems at all – all the snow had gone both in Germany and in England. So the flight was punctual and agreeable and almost sold out. Rather astonishing!!! I am sure not many of my fellow passengers headed for the darts World Championship – I wonder what their intentions were. Though of course London has a lot to offer for people who are interested in theater or every kind of music or any kind of museum…."

 World Championship 2

News for Dart PlayersCharis writes "On Saturday the first “American” match took place between Kirk Sheperd and Scott Burnett (I forgot to mention I had seen Scotty on Saturday already). We didn’t know other than from SEWA and Facebook but nevertheless recognized one another immediately.
It honestly was a pleasure to meet him and I am sure if Fletcher knew him he would never have accused him of bad sportsmanship…
The day of his World Championship debut hadn´t started too well – full of excitement he had forgotten his darts and equipment in the shuttle bus from the hotel. He got everything back in time for the match but hadn´t really much time to warm up properly. Before Scotty played I could see that Roland Scholten was confident and was playing much better than before (but Scotty didn’t have to play him) – it seems he’d starting to recover from his shoulder injury. As he told, it was the first time he played without pain. And Co Stompe managed to win against Steve Maish. Co Stompe had played some really great matches in Wolverhampton but lost them all nevertheless so he really deserved to win finally."

Note: Don't stop there Charis -- I was riveted in the end wondering who made it where, what players shook off the snow and played great and did those who walked play even better then before? Or were they tired....ahhhh stay tuned I guess :)

 Interview with Darin Young

News for Dart PlayersCharis writes "Darin, I read somewhere you started playing American Darts. Could you perhaps explain how American Darts is played – not everybody seems still to know it?

It is rather difficult to answer that question . And it would take some time to explain… It is totally different to English darts. One of the main differences is the scoring; the scoring areas are different. There is a red bull’s-eye in the middle and around it is the uncolored single area. Then we have a red outer double ring and an uncolored triple ring. And then a blue ring that counts as nothing."

Both days the weather was not really good – it again did rain though not as much as further up in the North of England from where floods were reported."

 Bookreview

Darts & Stuff of InterestCharis writes "Patrick Chaplin: Darts in England, 1900 - 39 A social history.

Patrick Chaplin – the only existing Dr. Darts – wrote this book on the basis of his PhD thesis. Meticulously and carefully he sought out sources and analyzed them to be able to show the interconnections between the social development in England and the rising sport of darts.

The result is a really interesting and good to read book, might be not a book for everyone something the high price will hinder anyway.

Chaplin first corrects the idea darts has it origin in Great Britain – originally it was a French game called “Flechette” which was developed in Great Britain into darts.

Then he sets right the relationship between the sport and the pub – it was not that darts was played from the beginning and everywhere in the pub. It were the big breweries which supported and established darts and dart leagues in the pubs. One of the reasons was to hinder people from massive drinking and from all kind of gambling – darts was a proven game of skill. Another reason was that it got necessary to change the pubs from low pubs into real public houses to get more people into the pubs offering pub games to pass there the leisure time (and more leisure time people had) instead visiting the new attractions like the cinema and the music halls were you could even take your wife of girl friend or the whole family as well. So the pubs had to get more respectable and family friendly and darts helped to this.

When the National Darts Association was founded the sport got generally valid rules.
The mass media supported the growing sport as well –especially the Sunday papers (News of the World) gave the sport a lot of coverage and helped to sponsor tournaments.

A highly recommended, unique book for people interested in social history, leisure time culture, sociology or in the sport of darts.

You can buy the book from Manchester University Press, the price is 55 brit.pounds.

 An Interview with Stacy Bromberg

News for Dart PlayersCharis writes "You seem to be around in American darts for years now – how long do you play darts already?
And how did it start?

I started playing darts in Jan. 1987. It was completely by chance. I was in a friend’s bar watching Monday night football and another friend’s dart team was short a player. They ‘drafted’ me and I’ve been playing ever since."
